Genesis Futsal Club have today announced the appointment of Brazilian, Gustavo Santos Lopes, as the head coach of their women's team ahead of another season in Tier 1 of the National Futsal Series.
In an Instagram post welcoming Lopes, the London-based club said:
"Gustavo joins Genesis with valuable experience from his time as part of the technical staff at Esporte Clube Taboão/Magnus, one of Brazil’s leading futsal clubs, bringing extensive knowledge in coaching, player development, and high-performance futsal."
Having secured Tier 1 status in 2025-26, their first season in England's top flight, it is a strong sign of intent from the club to secure a head coach of Lopes' experience as they aim to push forward and assert themselves amongst the country's top women's futsal sides.
Based in Sao Paulo, Taboão Magnus are one of the leading women's clubs in Brazilian futsal, with their senior side currently third in the top division of Liga Femenina.
Lopes worked closely with several of the youth age groups at Taboão, supporting player development, training sessions and high-performance preparation. Lopes helped Taboão's U11, U12 and U13 sides reach finals in the 2025 season, while he was part of the U16 side who became Sao Paulo state champions.
Speaking to Total Futsal about his new role, Lopes said,
"Moving to England is both a personal and professional challenge. I want to improve my English, experience a new culture and continue growing as a coach. Joining Genesis gives me the perfect opportunity to keep doing what I love.
My goal is to help every player develop, build a strong team identity and contribute to the club's growth."
Founded in 2002, Genesis is London's oldest futsal club and has been building strong foundations in Newham and East London ever since, with the emergence and success of their women's programme over the last decade only strengthening the club's roots within English futsal.
As the women's game continues to grow, the expertise and knowledge of coaches like Lopes can only serve to enhance the quality of the leagues and continue to raise standards.
"As a coach, I believe in strong technical fundamentals, intelligent decision-making and hard work," said Lopes.
"I want my teams to play with intensity, confidence and discipline, while always enjoying the game. I'm really excited to be part of Genesis!"
And Lopes certainly takes charge of an exciting Genesis side, with the likes of Lois Hall, who scored 12 times in 14 games last season, and goalkeeper Emma Butcher, who is part of the England Futsal Performance Pathway.
With the new women's season penned to be starting towards the end of September, it will be fascinating to follow both Lopes' and Genesis' journies, as they aim to turn Tier 1 survival into a higher-placed finish, and maybe even a play-off charge at the business end of the season.
