How Genesis outperformed data and rankings to put European futsal on notice
11.09.26, 08:10 Updated 11.09.26, 14:51
Not since Oxford City Lions in 2017 has an English side won twice in the same UEFA Futsal Champions League campaign on debut.
In Athens last month, Genesis became the latest to do so, with impressive victories over Blue Magic Dublin (7-4) and Sparta Belfast (8-3) earning them second place in Group F, either side of a resounding 6-1 defeat to group winners and hosts, SAC Doukas.
And their performances certainly warranted this outcome, comfortably the better side in both victories, dominating the ball, physical duels and vital moments in each contest.
As the fourth seed in Group F, it is the very nature of these displays, against second-seeded Blue Magic and third-seeded Sparta, that makes Genesis' European debut stand out, not just for English futsal fans, but across the rest of the preliminary round too.
